Painting Radiators Without Yellowing or Peeling
A tired radiator drags a clean room down. Fresh paint can transform it. Done badly, it yellows, chips or smells for weeks.
Choose the right paint
Radiators need heat-resistant paint. Standard gloss can blister, discolour and give off fumes when warm. Use a paint labelled for radiators or central heating.
Water-based radiator paints are low-odour and stay white for longer. Oil-based versions have traditionally been the tougher choice, but they can yellow more as they age. Choose to suit your situation.
Wait until it is cold
Turn the heating off and let the radiator cool completely. Painting a warm radiator makes the paint dry unevenly and can cause brush marks and bubbles.
Clean and degrease
Radiators collect dust and grease, especially behind the panels. Wipe with sugar soap and a damp cloth, then dry fully. A narrow brush or a hairdryer on cool air helps with fins.
Treat rust and flaking paint
Scrape and sand loose or bubbled paint. Rust patches should be wire-brushed, then treated with a metal primer to stop the stain returning. Feather the edges of the old paint so they do not show through.
Prime where needed
Bare metal and repaired areas need a primer suited to metal. Check the tin states that it works on radiators. Apply thin coats and let each dry.
Apply the topcoat
Use a small radiator brush for gaps and a mini roller for flat faces. Apply thin coats, from the top downwards, and avoid drips collecting at the edges. Two thin coats beat one heavy one.
Spray paint is possible, but masking the wall and floor is essential and overspray travels.
Allow curing time
Paint may feel dry within hours but continues to harden for days. Avoid turning the heating up fully straight away. Raise the temperature gradually, because strong heat on fresh paint can cause bubbling or a slight smell.
Common mistakes
Using ordinary gloss. Prone to yellowing, as we also mention in our piece on paint finishes.
Skipping the clean. Grease stops paint bonding.
Painting over rust. It will bleed through.
Heavy coats. Runs, sags and a long drying time.
Painting radiators alongside the room
Radiators are best done before the walls so you do not have to fiddle around fresh paint. When the whole room is being redone, we include them with the rest of the woodwork and metalwork in our interior painting service.
